Spawned from first hand experiences diving with humpback whales, Ross Isaacs has created a sense of the essential whale in his paintings. With a lifetime working as an underwater cinematographer in some of the most exotic locations around the world, he is based at Port Douglas in far north Queensland on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Specializing in natural history, Ross has produced a number of documentary films and books regarding humpback whales. He has participated in numerous international expeditions to capture these extraordinary creatures on film.
His brilliantly colored, grandiose visions depict the secret lives of the great leviathans, which visit the sun kissed waters of Maui each winter. He prefers working on large canvases using big areas of color and space. This allows him to create a more realistic impression of the true scale of these animals. Ross has studied the humpback whale's natural history for a number of decades and has worked with both southern and northern populations. The nuances of their behavior are portrayed in his paintings. Each work is an intimate portrait, focusing on a particular activity carried out in their complex patterns of life. Since Ross has spent an extensive amount of time underwater endeavoring to understand these animals; and he has a comprehensive insight into their lives unlike any other artist has.
